Step 1: Sowing Your Seeds
When to Sow
Plant after all danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed to at least 18°C. Warm soil encourages quick germination and strong early growth.
Soil Preparation
Pondoland pumpkins thrive in:
-
Deep, fertile soil
-
Well-drained ground
-
Plenty of compost or well-rotted manure
-
Soil rich in organic matter
Avoid waterlogged areas.
Sowing Instructions
-
Sow seeds 20 to 30 mm deep.
-
Plant 2 to 3 seeds per planting station.
-
Once seedlings are established, keep the strongest plant and remove the others.
-
Water thoroughly after sowing.
Step 2: Spacing
These are vigorous vines that need room to spread.
Allow approximately:
-
1.5 to 2 metres between plants
-
2.5 to 3 metres between rows
If growing in a food forest, allow the vines to trail beneath fruit trees where they can act as a living mulch.
Step 3: Growing Your Pumpkin
Watering
Keep the soil consistently moist while plants establish.
Once mature, Pondoland pumpkins are fairly drought tolerant but produce the best harvests with deep watering during:
-
Flowering
-
Fruit set
-
Fruit development
Water at the base of the plant to reduce fungal diseases.
Feeding
Pumpkins are heavy feeders.
Before planting:
-
Mix plenty of compost into the soil.
During growth:
-
Feed every 3 to 4 weeks with a balanced organic fertiliser.
-
Once flowering begins, a fertiliser slightly higher in potassium encourages larger, sweeter pumpkins.
Mulching
Apply a thick layer of mulch around the base of the plant.
Mulch helps:
-
Retain soil moisture
-
Suppress weeds
-
Improve soil health
-
Keep developing fruit clean
Flowers & Pollination
Pondoland pumpkins produce both male and female flowers on the same plant.
Bees and other pollinating insects are essential for good fruit production.
Avoid spraying insecticides during flowering.
Common Growing Problems
Flowers but No Fruit
Usually caused by:
-
Poor pollination
-
Very hot weather
-
Lack of pollinating insects
Planting flowers nearby helps attract bees.
Powdery Mildew
A common late-season fungal disease.
Reduce risk by:
-
Watering at soil level
-
Providing good airflow
-
Avoiding overcrowding
Fruit Rot
Prevent by placing mature pumpkins on:
-
Straw
-
Cardboard
-
Wooden boards
This keeps fruit off damp soil.
Harvesting
Pumpkins are ready when:
-
The skin has developed its mature colour.
-
The rind is hard and cannot easily be pierced with a fingernail.
-
The stem begins drying and becomes corky.
Harvest using secateurs or a sharp knife.
Leave 5 to 10 cm of stem attached to improve storage life.
Handle pumpkins carefully to avoid bruising.
Curing & Storage
For the longest storage:
-
Cure pumpkins in a warm, dry, well-ventilated place for 10 to 14 days.
-
Store in a cool, dry location.
Properly cured pumpkins can often store for several months, making them an excellent food security crop.
Saving Seeds
Pondoland Pumpkin is an open-pollinated heirloom.
To save seed:
-
Select your healthiest, best-performing fruit.
-
Allow pumpkins to fully mature.
-
Scoop out the seeds.
-
Wash away the pulp.
-
Dry seeds thoroughly for 2 to 3 weeks in a cool, shaded place.
-
Store in a labelled paper envelope or airtight container.
Note: Pumpkins can cross-pollinate with other varieties of Cucurbita moschata. If you wish to save pure seed, isolate plants from other C. moschata varieties during flowering.
