From Seed to Harvest
Thank you for purchasing our Organic Habanero Pepper seeds! Habaneros are famous for their intense heat, fruity flavour, and exceptional productivity. With the right care, each plant can produce dozens, even hundreds, of peppers throughout the growing season.
Heat Level: 100,000 to 350,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU)
Species: Capsicum chinense
Seed Information
-
Botanical Name: Capsicum chinense
-
Germination Time: 10 to 30 days
-
Days to Harvest: 90 to 120 days after transplanting
-
Plant Height: 60 to 120 cm
-
Sunlight: Full sun (6 to 8+ hours daily)
-
Growing Season: Warm, frost-free conditions
Step 1: Starting Your Seeds
When to Sow
Start seeds indoors 8 to 10 weeks before your last expected frost, or sow outdoors once all danger of frost has passed and daytime temperatures are consistently warm.
Sowing Instructions
-
Fill seed trays or small pots with quality seed-starting mix.
-
Sow seeds approximately 5 mm deep.
-
Water gently until the soil is evenly moist.
-
Cover with a humidity dome or plastic wrap until germination.
-
Keep the soil warm at 26°C to 30°C.
Tip: Habaneros love warmth. A heat mat can dramatically improve germination rates and speed.
Step 2: Caring for Seedlings
Once seedlings emerge:
-
Remove the humidity cover.
-
Provide bright light or full sun.
-
Keep the soil lightly moist, never soggy.
-
Feed every two weeks with a diluted organic liquid fertiliser.
When seedlings have developed 2 to 4 true leaves, transplant them into larger pots if they are not yet ready for the garden.
Step 3: Hardening Off
Before planting outdoors, gradually introduce your seedlings to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days.
This helps prevent transplant shock.
Step 4: Planting Out
Choose a sunny location with fertile, well-draining soil.
Soil Requirements
-
Rich in compost or aged manure
-
Well-draining
-
pH between 6.0 and 6.8
Plant Spacing
-
45 to 60 cm between plants
-
60 to 75 cm between rows
Water thoroughly after planting.
Step 5: Growing Your Habaneros
Watering
Water deeply when the top few centimetres of soil begin to dry.
Avoid frequent shallow watering, which encourages weak root systems.
Feeding
Feed every 2 to 3 weeks with an organic balanced fertiliser.
Once flowers appear, switch to a fertiliser slightly higher in potassium to encourage heavy fruit production.
Mulching
A layer of organic mulch helps:
-
Retain soil moisture
-
Reduce weeds
-
Improve soil health
-
Keep roots cool during hot weather
Support
Mature plants can become heavily loaded with fruit. A stake or tomato cage helps support branches and prevents breakage.
Common Growing Problems
Slow Germination
Usually caused by cool soil.
Maintain temperatures between 26°C and 30°C.
Flowers Falling Off
Often caused by:
-
Cold nights
-
Extreme heat
-
Inconsistent watering
-
Plant stress
Yellow Leaves
Usually indicates:
-
Overwatering
-
Poor drainage
-
Nutrient deficiency
Common Pests
Watch for:
-
Aphids
-
Whiteflies
-
Spider mites
-
Thrips
-
Caterpillars
Regular inspections make pest control much easier.
Harvesting
Habaneros are ready when:
-
They have reached their full size.
-
Their colour has fully developed (orange, red, chocolate, yellow, or the variety-specific mature colour).
-
The fruit feels firm and glossy.
Use scissors or secateurs to cut peppers from the plant rather than pulling them off.
Frequent harvesting encourages the plant to produce even more peppers.
Handling Hot Peppers Safely
Habaneros contain high levels of capsaicin, the compound responsible for their heat.
When harvesting or preparing peppers:
-
Wear gloves if handling large quantities.
-
Avoid touching your eyes or face.
-
Wash your hands thoroughly after handling.
-
Keep peppers away from young children and pets.
Saving Seeds
To save seed:
-
Allow peppers to fully ripen on the plant.
-
Remove the seeds.
-
Dry them completely for 1 to 2 weeks in a cool, shaded area.
-
Store in a labelled paper envelope or airtight container in a cool, dry place.
Properly stored seeds remain viable for several years.
Growing Tips for Success
✓ Give plants as much sunshine as possible.
✓ Warm soil equals faster growth.
✓ Feed regularly for maximum yields.
✓ Harvest often to encourage continuous fruiting.
✓ Protect plants from frost.
✓ Habanero plants can live for several years in frost-free climates or when overwintered indoors, producing even larger harvests in subsequent seasons.
