Large Marigolds Planting & Care Guide

Large Marigolds Planting & Care Guide

🌞 Ideal Growing Conditions

  • Sunlight: Full sun (at least 6–8 hours daily).
  • Temperature: Best growth between 18–30°C (65–85°F).
  • Soil: Well-draining, moderately fertile soil. Marigolds dislike soggy roots.
  • pH: Slightly acidic to neutral (6.0–7.0).

🌱 Planting Instructions

1. From Seed

  • Start Indoors: 4–6 weeks before the last frost date.
  • Sowing Depth: 0.5 cm (¼ inch).
  • Germination: 5–7 days at 21°C (70°F).
  • Transplanting: Move outdoors after all danger of frost has passed and seedlings are 5–8 cm tall.

2. Direct Sowing

  • Sow seeds directly in the garden once the soil is warm and frost-free.
  • Thin seedlings to 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart once they’re a few inches tall.

3. Transplants (Nursery Plants)

  • Space plants 30–45 cm apart for full-sized African marigolds.
  • Plant at the same soil depth they were growing in the pot.

💧 Watering

  • After Planting: Water thoroughly to settle roots.
  • Regular Care: Keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
  • Mature Plants: Water deeply once or twice a week in dry weather. Avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal issues.

🌸 Feeding

  • Marigolds don’t need heavy feeding.
  • Before Planting: Mix a balanced, slow-release fertilizer (e.g., 10-10-10) into the soil.
  • Midseason Boost: Feed once with a liquid fertilizer if growth slows or blooms fade.

💡 Too much fertilizer can cause lush leaves but fewer flowers.

✂️ Maintenance

  • Deadheading: Regularly remove spent blooms to encourage more flowers.
  • Pinching: Pinch back early growth to promote bushier plants.
  • Weeding: Keep the base clear to prevent competition and improve airflow.
  • Mulching: Apply a light organic mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

🐛 Pests & Problems

Marigolds are generally pest-resistant, but watch for:

  • Aphids and whiteflies – rinse off with water or spray with neem oil.
  • Spider mites – increase humidity or apply insecticidal soap.
  • Root rot – avoid overwatering and ensure proper drainage.

🪴 Bonus: Marigolds deter nematodes, mosquitoes, and some beetles — making them great companion plants for tomatoes, peppers, and beans.

❄️ End of Season Care

  • Marigolds are annuals: they’ll die back after the first frost.
  • Collect seeds from dried flower heads for next year’s planting.
  • Pull and compost dead plants to keep your beds tidy and disease-free.
