Coffea arabica 'Caturra' Dwarf Variety
From Seed to Harvest
Thank you for purchasing our Coffea arabica 'Caturra' Dwarf Variety seeds!
Caturra is a naturally compact selection of Arabica coffee, prized for its manageable size, attractive glossy foliage, fragrant white flowers, and exceptional coffee quality. Its smaller growth habit makes it an excellent choice for home gardens, food forests, patios, greenhouses, and even large containers.
Growing coffee from seed is a rewarding journey. While it requires patience, a healthy coffee tree can produce beans for many years.
Botanical Name: Coffea arabica 'Caturra'
Seed Information
-
Germination Time: 4 to 12 weeks
-
Days to Germination: 30 to 90 days (occasionally longer)
-
First Flowers: Approximately 2 to 4 years
-
First Harvest: Usually 3 to 5 years from seed
-
Mature Height: 1.5 to 2.5 metres
-
Sunlight: Bright filtered light or morning sun
-
Growing Climate: Warm, frost-free, humid environments
Step 1: Preparing Your Seeds
Coffee seeds germinate best when fresh.
If your seeds have dried slightly during storage:
-
Soak the seeds in clean, room-temperature water for 24 hours before sowing.
-
Discard any seeds that float continuously after soaking, as they are less likely to be viable.
Step 2: Sowing Your Seeds
Use a quality seed-starting mix that is light, well-draining and rich in organic matter.
Suitable mixes include:
-
Fine compost mixed with coarse river sand
-
Coco coir with perlite
-
Premium seedling mix
Sowing Instructions
-
Fill pots or seed trays with moist growing medium.
-
Sow seeds approximately 10 to 15 mm deep.
-
Cover lightly with soil.
-
Water gently.
-
Place in a warm, humid location.
Ideal Germination Conditions
-
Temperature: 24°C to 30°C
-
Bright indirect light
-
Even moisture
-
High humidity
Do not allow the growing medium to dry out completely.
Patience is important. Coffee seeds often germinate slowly and unevenly.
Step 3: Caring for Seedlings
Once seedlings emerge:
-
Provide bright, indirect light.
-
Protect from harsh afternoon sun.
-
Keep soil consistently moist but never waterlogged.
-
Maintain good humidity.
Coffee seedlings usually produce distinctive "butterfly" seed leaves before developing their first true leaves.
Step 4: Potting On
Once seedlings reach approximately 15 to 20 cm tall, transplant them into larger containers.
Use rich, well-draining soil containing:
-
Compost
-
Coco coir
-
Pine bark
-
Perlite or coarse sand
Coffee dislikes compacted soil.
Step 5: Choosing a Growing Location
Coffee naturally grows beneath the forest canopy.
Choose a location with:
-
Bright filtered light
-
Morning sun
-
Protection from harsh afternoon heat
-
Shelter from strong winds
Avoid prolonged exposure to intense midday sun, especially in hot summer climates.
Watering
Coffee prefers evenly moist soil.
Water when the top few centimetres of soil begin to dry.
Avoid:
-
Waterlogged soil
-
Standing water
-
Extended dry periods
Mulching helps maintain even soil moisture.
Feeding
Coffee benefits from regular feeding.
Apply an organic fertiliser every 4 to 6 weeks during the growing season.
Well-balanced fertilisers, compost, worm castings and liquid seaweed are all excellent choices.
Reduce feeding during cooler months when growth slows.
Mulching
Apply organic mulch around the base of the plant using:
-
Bark chips
-
Leaf litter
-
Compost
-
Straw
Keep mulch a few centimetres away from the trunk.
Mulch helps:
-
Retain moisture
-
Feed soil organisms
-
Regulate soil temperature
Pruning
Caturra naturally grows as a compact shrub.
Light pruning helps:
-
Encourage bushier growth
-
Improve airflow
-
Increase future fruit production
-
Keep plants at a convenient harvesting height
Remove dead, damaged or crossing branches whenever necessary.
Flowering & Fruit
Once mature, coffee trees produce clusters of beautiful, fragrant white flowers.
These are followed by green berries that slowly ripen into bright red "coffee cherries."
Depending on your climate, cherries usually require 7 to 9 months to fully mature.
Harvesting
Coffee cherries are ready when:
-
They are deep red.
-
They feel slightly soft.
-
They detach easily from the branch.
Only harvest fully ripe cherries for the best coffee flavour.
Processing Your Coffee
After harvesting:
-
Remove the outer fruit.
-
Wash away the sticky pulp.
-
Dry the beans thoroughly.
-
Allow the beans to rest ("cure") for several weeks.
-
Remove the parchment layer.
-
Roast before grinding and brewing.
Home processing is simple and deeply rewarding.
Growing in Containers
Caturra is one of the best coffee varieties for pots.
Choose a container with:
-
Good drainage holes
-
At least 30 to 40 litres capacity for mature plants
Repot every 2 to 3 years as the plant grows.
Common Growing Problems
Yellow Leaves
Usually caused by:
-
Overwatering
-
Poor drainage
-
Nutrient deficiencies
Brown Leaf Edges
Often indicate:
-
Low humidity
-
Irregular watering
-
Hot, dry winds
Slow Growth
May result from:
-
Cold temperatures
-
Insufficient light
-
Poor nutrition
Leaf Drop
Can occur after:
-
Sudden temperature changes
-
Moving the plant
-
Drought stress
Coffee usually recovers once conditions improve.
Saving Seeds
If your tree produces cherries:
-
Harvest fully ripe fruit.
-
Remove all pulp.
-
Wash thoroughly.
-
Sow fresh whenever possible.
Fresh coffee seed has a much higher germination rate than older seed.
